I can see this conversation.

Exec A: It takes 5% more time to write a custom excerpt.

Exec B: And we get 15% lower click-through when the summary gives away the point of the article.

The Boss Exec: Okay! Let's keep the summaries vague and automated, so they're cheaper to produce and we get more pageviews!

My point: the summaries aren't meant to be read, they're meant to incite a click-through. The cheaper the better! Also, they should fit nicely in the pre-designed space allocated to them.
